Well, the month of being tortured by Jillian is finally over! I would say I was happy, but the torture isn't over! Amy and I are hosting a Jillian Ripped in 30 challenge starting TODAY! So I'm happy to never have to see the Shred again, but not as excited as I would be if I was really done with Jillian! Today I am linking up with Holly and Amber to share my results of doing the 30 Day Shred in July.
First, to be completely up front, I want to point out that while doing the 30 Day Shred in July, I also began training for my half marathon on July 1st. So a lot of days, I doubled up on workouts. I believe that the changes you see in the pictures are just as much from the running as from the Shred. I DO notice a big difference in myself from doing the Shred, I think the muscle tone I developed just isn't as obvious because I still have quite a bit of weight to lose.
I have been a nervous wreck about sharing these photos. I kept thinking "WHY on earth did I take my progress photos in a sports bra?" Who knows why...I did it, so here they are. If you don't want to see a 270+ pound woman in a sports bra, feel free to click that little red X in the upper right hand corner. My stupid facial expression and hand gestures are the result of my comedy routine for my husband - I should have checked to make sure he took more than one photo! Oh well!
The biggest difference I have noticed is in my thighs and belly. I also really wish I had made more of a point to get pictures that include my entire leg, because my calves have really slimmed down too.
Neck - before 16 inches, after 16 inches - no change
Chest - before 47 inches, after 45 inches - minus 2
Waist - before 45 inches, after 43 inches - minus 2
Upper Arm - before 17 inches, after 16 inches - minus 1
Lower Arm - before 11 inches, after 10 inches - minus 1
Hips - before 52 inches, after 51 inches - minus 1
Thigh - before 28 inches, after 26 inches - minus 2
Lower leg - before 17 inches, after 17 inches - same
Total inches lost in July = 9 inches
Total inches lost total since March 2013 - 19 inches!
And for the scale?
In my last scale update on 6/24/13, I was 284.6, and I was holding steady at this number on 6/30/13. Today my weight is 278 pounds, a loss of 6.6 pounds in July. I'll take it.
Final thoughts on The 30 Day Shred:
This DVD grew on me, but I'm pretty sure I'm done with it forever. I found it to be very effective, but I'm just over it. I definitely feel much stronger than I did in the beginning, and I 100% believe that it has helped me become a stronger runner and really helped to kick off my half-marathon training. At the beginning, I could barely do a push-up, and doing 20 jumping jacks was a struggle. Now, I can do several respectable push-ups, and I could probably do 50 jumping jacks without getting tired. If you stick with this program, it definitely works.
That isn't to say that it isn't HARD. Is was. There were many days that I didn't feel like doing it, at all. I missed a few days on Level 1 because I was having weird ankle pain. The cardio on Level 1 is pretty high impact, also on July 4 I jumped off the truck tailgate, it was raining and I slipped and landed hard. That didn't help. Anyway, I missed a few days, but I don't think that hurt me too bad, with all the running that I've been doing too.
In general, I think I did a lot better with this if I sucked it up and got up early enough to get it done before work. Otherwise, in the evenings, I often had a helper:
Just doing crunches here, not the Shred, but you get the idea.
Also my motivation tends to wear really thin in the evening. And I was tempted a few times to be like "it's already 9pm, I'll try again tomorrow!" Much better to just get it over with first thing in the morning.
I'm pretty proud that I stuck with this all the way through July even though I sometimes hated it. Also, seeing my results out there like this gives me the motivation I need to keep going!
Can't wait to check out everyone else's results!
Also, just for fun, here are my progress pictures from March 2013 until now -
I know I look ANGRY in the first picture, I promise I am not, I apparently just have a knack for taking really bad progress pictures. Haha.
I cannot believe my belly was that big in the first picture, I distinctly remember that I was sucking it in, big time.
I am down 19 inches and 18 pounds since March 2013, and am a whole lot fitter and happier.
